American Literary Realism is when an author focuses on the traits that are here and now. Two authors, Mark Twain and Thomas Pynchon, wrote with realism. They related parts of their stories to real events that could happen. The authors also described things very realistically. Inherent Vice is related to Huckleberry Finn through American literary realism, by both authors linguistically use dialect from the book's regions, the characters are flawed, and the novel's plot is realistic. Both of the authors write phonetically, capturing some regional dialect. Jim throughout Huckleberry Finn had many times where he used the regional dialect; like, "Well, 'twarn't no use to 'sturb you, Huck, tell we could do sumfn-but we's all right now..." Duke and Dauphin go about as though they truly favor and well read, however truly they are regular hoodlums. At first, The Duke and Dauphin attempt to get people to believe they are royalty, yet even Finn comes to understand that they are only lawbreakers. This can be seen when Finn says, "It didn't take me long to make up my mind that these liars warn't no kings nor dukes at all, but just low-down humbugs and frauds." (Baym 181) Throughout Inherent Vice, Thomas Pynchon shows just how flawed his characters can be, also. Doc Sportello is a pothead private investigator. Shasta and Mickey Wolfmann are having an affair on Mickey's wife while Mickey's wife is having an affair with someone else. Even the title, Inherent Vice, practically means the inevitable flaw. Both of the novel's plots are realistic in some ways. There are many descriptions, in the stories that make the reader believe they are almost in the story with the characters. Huck and Jim are going down the Mississippi, aiming to achieve Cairo, Illinois, and afterward, head up the Ohio River toward freedom in the northern states. Also, in the beginning of Inherent Vice, Doc begins to describe Shasta. "Back then is was always sandals, the bottom half of a flower-print bikini, faded Country Joe & the Fish T-shirt.
