Huck Finn Themes In Mark Twain’s book Huckleberry Finn, there are numerous themes presented. However, there are a few that stand out or appear more frequently. To name a few; Desire to escape, evils of racism, family‒ blessing or curse and growing up. Multiple themes can be found in a single story or book, it is almost impossible to say there is but a single theme in a book such as Huckleberry Finn. The desire to escape is without a doubt one of the most apparent themes in the book. For example, Huck is desperate to escape from his abusive father and be on his own. “Pap he hadnt been seen for more than a year, and that was comfortable for me; I didnt want to see him no more. He used to always whale me when he was sober and could get his hands on me; though I used to take to the woods most of the time when he was around.” (Twain 10). Only a small fraction are apparent to most people, however, there are always themes that are present but hard to decipher. The themes mentioned were some of the more profound or obvious themes in the book.but I done it, and I warn’t even sorry for it afterwards, neither. I didn’t do him no more mean tricks,and I wouldn’t done that one if I’d a knowed it would make him feel that way” (Twain 78). Even though it took some time, Huck shows that he cares about Jim and his feelings. By saying this, it also shows that Huck is changing the way he thinks about people. The theme companionship as salvation is presented in Huck Finn throughout the entire book. It is safe to say that Huck and Jim would not have gotten as far as they did if they did not have each other. Although both Huck and Jim had the power to succeed in their plans to escape on their own, the obstacles they came across were much easier to overcome together.
