The late Hugo Chavez of Venezuela was a president many will not forget. He influenced many in more ways than one. Hugo Chavez went from poverty and prison to presidency. His accomplishments were legion and his story speaks more than words. The depth, scope, and popularity of his accomplishments mark Chavez as the renaissance president of the 21st century (Petras). Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias was born on July 28, 1954, to a poor family in the town of Sabaneta in the province of Barinas (Minster). Chavez’s parents were school teachers; however, they also struggled to make ends meet. His father, Hugo de los Reyes, gained political power when he became the regional director of education and later the governor of Barinas (Zeese and Flowers). Although the family was poor, Chavez did things any other kid would do; he played sports. He used his skill in baseball to escape the life of poverty; Chavez had to be a standout player. Following high school, Chavez was given a scholarship to the Venezuelan Academy of Military Sciences where he earned a degree in military science and engineering. First diagnosed with cancer in 2011, after doctors operated to treat a pelvic abscess, they discovered a tumor (Cordoba and Winslow). Chavez received treatment; although, it came back again. Chavez was treated once again; however, doctors believed it to be sarcoma (Cordoba and Winslow). Sarcomas are more likely to come back; they undergo metastasis, which increases the chances of it coming back. The treatments take a physical toll on one's body.
