Human Nature Within the short story A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings the author Gabriel Marquez uses human nature to show how society twists the true meaning of religion. The characters behavior within the story towards the angel reflects some of the seven deadly sins. No one realizes the angel was a blessing until he finally fly’s away, “she kept on watching until it was no longer possible for her to see him, because then he was no longer an annoyance in her life but an imaginary dot on the horizon of the sea” (Marquez,4). Sloth can be defined as failing to develop spiritually due to laziness, which ultimately rejects the grace of God. As a priest Father Gonzaga wasn’t concerned with the angel wellbeing, but rather if he truly was an angel or not. “The parish priest had his first suspicion of an imposter when he saw that he did not understand the language of God or know how to greet His ministers. Generally in everyday life people tend to be self-interested and often refuse to help others, this can be seen in situations such as the bystander effect.
