Human Nature In Lord Of The Flies

What is the moral alignment of human nature? That is a question that multitudes of people have asked, ranging from philosophical thinkers to scientists, but also authors as well. In Lord of the Flies, Golding illustrates that while there is some positive aspects of humanity, human nature is evil overall. But is that so? There’s evidence from various sources, ranging from literature such as To Kill a Mockingbird to real life events, that challenge Golding’s view of the inherent evil of human nature. These pieces of evidence show how human nature, although it can be influenced to do terrible actions, is a force for good overall.

However, the actions of the boys in this story were astoundingly different to those of the ones in Lord of the Flies. An example would be when recalling a blog talking about the story, Bregman mentions that the boys had “made a pact never to quarrel” (Bregman). Bregman then goes into more detail about how they curtailed any infighting, such as mentioning how they “imposed a time out” whenever the “quarreled” (Bregman). This shows that the boys’ main priority was to make sure that everyone was safe and on favorable terms with eachother. This, in turn, shows how human nature is inclined to work together and help each other out, proving the well-meaning morality of human nature. Along with the prevention of much infighting, Bregman also mentions how the boys were able to create “a small commune” that included a “food garden, hollowed-out tree trunks to store rainwater, a gymnasium with curious weights, a badminton court, chicken pens and a permanent fire.” (Bregman). This highlights how the boys’ main goal did was to meet all the boys’ needs, with the creation of all these places helping to provide everyone with all the food, water, and materials they needed. It further illustrates how people tend to care and provide for others when they’re in need, showing how human nature is inclined to be good-natured. In the End, the actions of the boys in this story showed them trying to care for other’s needs and make sure everyone was safe with eachother, which highlights how human nature is more capable of good than
