Blind Envision a blind person having a smooth conversation with the cashier at a supermarket. Next, envision everyone having the lack of vision. My use of “everyone” includes artificially intelligent machines, without knowing that it would be difficult to distinguish the differences of humans and artificial intelligent machines. Spike Jonze’s film Her and James Boyle’s essay “Endowed by Their Creator? The future of Constitutional Personhood,” create a resemblance between an A.I. and humans to bring awareness in how they are more similar than different to us. Spike Jonze attaches humanistic qualities to Samantha to create the effect of normalizing the relationship between operating systems and people. Despite the instinctive judgments to these bonds, Samantha is not in this commitment because of obedience but because she belongs to herself. To have a conversation filled with colors and flavors, companied by the person we fancy is a common desire. Samantha achieves this fluidity in her dialogue when she engages in conversation with Theodore giving the semblance of a human figure. Throughout the film, Theodore is focused on during conversations with Samantha creating the illusion that he’s having a casual phone call with a friend. At a point he mentions to her how “she seems like a person” but she’s just a voice in a computer (00:14:23).
