Divergent is a 2014 film based on a novel written by Veronica Roth under the same name. The story in Divergent tales place in a post-apocalyptic and dystopian version of Chicago. Dystopian societies are societies that involve futuristic and imaginary places where people lead fearful and dehumanized lives. In this science fiction movie, people are divided into distinct groups based on predetermined human virtues. In the Hunger Games, the Hunger games is the annual ceremony and in Divergent a ceremony of a similar nature is introduced showing how people were selected or placed into the respective community groupings. The villains in both stories are authoritarian rulers who have the respective nations under their thumb. President Snow is a megalomaniac authoritarian ruler that uses threats and violence to ensure that a nation remains subservient to him. The young people are pitted against each other by President Snow as a reminder of what would happen if they go out of line. Jeanine Mathews in Divergent is a genius who is willing to drug the people so as to start a war that will make it easy for her to consolidate power. These rulers are hungrier about power than serving the interests of their people. They both depict the greed and corruption in such societies. They have a fundamental difference, however, based on their genders. The Capitol in the Hunger Games is very clearly defined as the all-powerful sovereign that controls the Panem nation. In Divergent, the government is unnamed and has members from different factions. It seems to be more about the aspect of power brokerage and negotiations for a few people to remain relevant as powerful political figures in their respective areas of representation.
