Hurricane Katrina was a terrible Atlantic storm that was a big tragedy. This event began with big winds and lots of flooding and ended with many damages. Because this tragedy led to around 2000 deaths, and eventually to better technology to help track hurricanes, it will always be remembered as one of the worst hurricanes in history.
Hurricane Katrina was a very bad storm. It occurred in late august of 2005. “Over the next two days it gathered strength, becoming a tropical storm that was named Katrina.” ("Hurricane Katrina"). The winds started at 70 mph. It was the worst in Louisiana, but it also hit other states like Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. It was one of the worst hurricanes in history, with it killing more than 1800 people.
On the 27th of august is when it started getting really bad. The day started off with 115 mph wind, but by the end of the day it was already at 170 mph. That's why Hurricane Katrina is considered one of the most powerful Atlantic storms. On October 4th the Emergency Reform Act was created. By October 11 all the water was gone. By this time some victims of this event were still being evacuated and led to safety. At the end of this event many people had lost their lives and their homes. About 2000 people died in this major tragedy. It left 400,000 people homeless with almost no money or food to eat. 25,000 people helped the people affected by this by giving them food, supplies and more. This whole disaster cost about $125 billion.
