In Kay S. Hymowitz’s essay “Where Have the Good Men Gone?” published in the Wall Street Journal she claims that all men go through a phase known as pre-adulthood, and that this phase does not bring out the best in them. Pre- adulthood is when young men live in an in-between state of adulthood and adolescents. “Today’s pre-adults are…a major demographic event.” Hymowitz discuss the way a man’s place in society has drastically changed since they began entering pre-adulthood. Men are remaining in this state of pre-adulthood and in turn they are allowing their female counterparts to get an advantage, women are graduating college and getting higher paying jobs at higher rates than men and much of this is due to men remaining in pre-adulthood.

Men have been shed in a negative light for not living up to the standards that women are looking for, but I also think that women’s standards of men have drastically increased. Women have higher standards of themselves now than ever before. Due to this, many women have put finding a man to spend the rest of their lives with on the back burner. They have become more focused on their careers and making successful lives for themselves. Men are in a situation where they are struggling to discover what comes next, and while I understand this struggle I do not feel that it is an excuse. Women also struggle with similar issues, but it has not caused them to give up and revert into this pre-adulthood phase. Women have taken these struggles in stride and gone on to get degrees and find jobs where they are successful and happy, while men are just waiting to be told what to do
