In the song “I Wanna Go Back” by David Dunn uses hyperbole, symbolism, and personification to express the idea that all he wants to do is go back as Jesus called us to and have faith like a child. David Dunn and his family had a tragedy strike their family in 2013 that was the inspiration for this whole album and specifically this song. In the song “I Wanna Go Back” Dunn uses song lyrics from songs that you would sing in Sunday school when you were little to bring back the theme of wanting to go back to when he was a kid and sung those songs. He sings “ I wanna go back to Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me, for the Bible tells me so. I wanna go back to this little light gonna let it shine, gonna let it shine, I wanna go back.” …show more content…
He uses this to emphasize that as a kid the over exaggeration is not a concept in they believe that they do have hands big enough to hold the world they believe freely. And this just helps to emphasize that the underlying message of to go back to when you were a child and do as Jesus called and have faith like a child.
Dunn uses personification when talking about how the “bible told him so” in reality, the bible can not talk but he is saying how the Bible says in its pages the written word talks about this. This just helps show you where the other lyrics came from they all are derived from the bible the core meaning is in the bible. The thesis of Jesus calling us to go and have faith like a child comes from Matthew 18:1-5. This all helps show the underlying strong meaning of the song. As Dunn keeps the theme throughout the whole song of wanting to go back we can see how his life and the passing of his little niece have affected his faith but overall made it stronger as he wants to do as Jesus says and have faith like a child. This affected me greatly at a time when I was struggling with school and people telling me my faith was bad and that Christians were all horrible people it helped be trust in God and have the carefree faith of a child full
