Authors have to be credible to allow their readers to trust what they are reading. Gill relies on pathos to establish credibility with the reader in his memoir How Starbucks Saved My Life. Hyperboles and diction is used in the novel to establish credibility with pathos. When the author shows their emotions in their memoir, it creates a sense of credibility for the author and makes the reader think the author is a trustworthy source. Hyperboles help highlight the authors emotions in a novel. For example, “I am happier than I have ever been” (Gill 205), and “The gentle love and peace and happiness I felt now I had never experienced before (Gill 206). He uses these hyperboles to portray his sense of happiness and glee towards his life now.
