Odysseus was, in my eyes, not justified in punishing everyone he did. Some people such as the maids where punished just for sleeping with the wooers. They didn’t deserve to be punished as harshly as they did. However, the wooers themselves got what they deserved. Odysseus won the competition set up by Penelope.
This text shows that Odysseus can be humble and accept that he needs to listen to survive and he alone can not keep his whole crew alive. Odysseus tends to use his own wit and skills to survive not needing others help, but sometimes he does need to take others advice to
As a leader Odysseus should be careful to do exactly what will benefit his crew the most. The lack of communication throughout the whole journey home will eventually lead to mistrust and betrayal of Odysseus by his crew. Following Scylla and Charybdis they reach the island of the god of the sun, and because of the crew’s spite for Odysseus they don’t follow his directions not to harm the cattle of the Sun. Just in the events of the journey back to Ithaca alone the reader can see how Odysseus’ inability to be a strong leader leads to the dismantling of a good relationship between him and his crew, which leads to a much more difficult trip. Odysseus’ inability to be a great leader for the group leads to a lot of conflict among the crew members.
In the epic The Odyssey, the main character Odysseus’ foolishness greatly impedes his journey home and costs him the lives of all of his men. After spending 10 years away during the war at Troy, Odysseus’ prolonged journey home lasts ten more years due to his constant foolishness along the way. After defeating the cyclops, Polyphemus, Odysseus turns and yells “‘Cyclops, if ever a mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes’ son, whose home’ on Ithaca”’(Homer 501- 505). Odysseus tells that cyclops what his name is and where he is from just because he wants recognition for what he has just accomplished.
Odysseus in the book The Odyssey by Homer is a bad leader due to the lack of attentiveness he shows towards his teammates in many different ways. For example, Odysseus’s goal was to get him and all of his teammates home but by the time he got home all of his teammates had died. Odysseus also failed to communicate with his teammates many times. As well as the fact that Odysseus was also very easy to convince and that led to a lot of lost time in their journey.
Leadership in The Odyssey Being a leader means to look past all distractions and focus on the main goal. Odysseus must return to his home, Ithaca, with the help of his crew. As they face evil and cruel forces, Odysseus’s strength, leadership, and dedication is tested. Despite Odysseus instructing his crew to return to their ship in order to avoid the Cicones, Odysseus forcefully ties his crew to the ship and reminds the crew about their past encounters to motivate them, supporting Homer’s changes in leadership. Homer continuously portrays Odysseus as being a strong, witty leader although his crew does not always obey him.
Written by the famous Greek author, Homer, The Odyssey depicts the tribulations of Odysseus’ voyage home, with one encounter featuring a barbaric humanoid: the Cyclops. Odysseus degrades and injures the creature, to which some may claim is inhumane and unnecessary, as the Cyclops was only abiding by its core principles. While I agree that the Cyclops acting on its own values is not inherently wrong, I do not believe that Odysseus was immoral in retaliating and hurting the Cyclops: as Odysseus was only following his own values. If one’s principles affect another, and it negatively impacts the recipient, then it should not be considered morally incorrect for them to resist and oppose, in order to maintain their own values.
Odysseus is NOT Our Savior Odysseus is not a hero in the Epic Poem “The Odyssey,” by Homer. I believe this because he is the reason all of his men were killed, he surrounded himself with people who were less intelligent than him, and he was not able to resist his inner feelings towards everything that he was tempted by. Many consider him to be one of the greatest heroes of all time but I strongly disagree with that. This essay will hopefully help you to understand that Odysseus is NOT our savior.
In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus repeatedly shows that he is polytropos, for as Zeus says “There is no mortal half so wise”(3). Using his wits, Odysseus gets him and his men out of several sticky situations in the Odyssey, proving his leadership through his actions that save the lives of his crew member. On the other hand Odysseus’ streak of constantly outsmarting challenges, goes to his head, and unfortunately causes Odysseus to develop a hubris. His pride at times makes him arrogant, believing that he always knows best, which leads to the untimely demise of his crew. While Odysseus proves to be good leader by saving his crew from trouble with his wits, he is ultimately a bad leader because he refuses to listen to advice.
In the book called The Odyssey by Homer, it mainly follows the story of a king of a village called Ithaca, hundreds of years ago-This man, is named Odysseus. Odysseus goes through many adventures after the victory of the Trojan War. However, this is where Odysseus, is not being as strong as a great war hero and a king as he should be. Although Odysseus was seen as a very strong person, physically and mentally, he lacks the appreciation and the care of his crew throughout the trials and didn’t think through many of his actions thoroughly and how they would affect not only his crew but people around him.
The Odyssey by Homer revolves around the character, Odysseus, and his ten-year struggle to return home after the Trojan War. As the epic’s idol, he displays the combination of a clever, handsome, and courageous man popular among the mortals as well as the gods. Essentially, he embodies the ideals of the ancient Greek culture, being adorned with many favored characteristics of the era. However, an intriguing aspect of Odysseus lies in his personality. As the protagonist, he does not manifest the entirety of a stereotypical hero because Odysseus has a fatal flaw—his arrogance.
Odysseus from The Odyssey is similar to Marcos Urgurte, a teenager who saved somebody from a burning building, in heroic acts; They are both brave and selfless. Odysseus displays heroic traits, such as bravery, when dealing with the suitors. Odysseus is talking to one of them when the abhorrent suitor says, “How do you think you shuffle off and get away after that imprudence?” (Kinsella 1028).
A leader might want absolute control and force his agenda on his people. In a similar way Odysseus is a great leader, this is shown as he leads his men through the Trojan war. however, he faces many challenges and makes many decisions. In “The Odyssey,” Homer uses internal and external conflicts to reveal Odysseus as an intelligent and hopeful, but selfish character. Intelligence is a valued trait that many heroes posses.
The first trait is that he is a very arrogant person and this often puts him and his men in danger. Secondly, Odysseus can be deceitful and not fully communicate the facts of each situation. Odysseus was a weak leader and his lack of vision in not seeing the strength and possibilities in his men combined with his inability to effectively communicate to those around him ultimately led to his failure of not being able to safely deliver his men back to Ithaca. The story of the Cyclops in Homer 's The Odyssey illustrated how Odysseus '
In the book The Odyssey, the main character, Odysseus, is a man who is loved and respected by many. In the beginning of the book, we learn that Odysseus has left on a journey and, since it has been many years since his departure, many people assume that he has passed. On his journey, he portrays his many traits, not all of them being good ones either. Some of his good traits include his cunning, bravery, and hard work ethic. On the other hand, his negative traits are his excessive pride, immense curiosity, and rather large temper.
