Hedda’s ‘hysteria’ is because of the fact she is unsuited to the female roles of society. Her decision of marriage and her unwanted pregnancy has aided a lot in her mental hysteric situation. In A Doll’s House, the protagonist of the play Nora Helmer’s hysteria has released in the Tarantella dance. Similarly, playing of piano by Hedda helps in the release of her hysteria. Being a daughter of General and having military background, hedda is following strict codes of conducts and narrow traditions in her family, because of it, not only aristocratic manners but ethical nullity of that bourgeois class gets prevail in her attitude. She has proven herself as a bizzare, independent and strong or in other words she is lady of situations in it real sense due to her manipulative tactics. But the hypocrisy of the situation lies in the fact that still she is very determined to live her life according to the norms of the society around her, as the era depicted in the play is the time of 19 century. This interesting case, Hedda can be analyzed by the hints from her past and the lines of dialogue especially her slips of tongue. She is a female but she defies the demands of patriarchal society. She refuses to follow the traditional norms and standards in which women are expected to be servile and passive, as Ibsen puts it; “she really wants to live the whole life of a man “.In the play Hedda Gabler, Hedda tries to go beyond the limits. Under the mask of Feminism, she is having masculine goals, she wants to be authoritative, govern the world and rule over people. But she never ever permits herself to be ruled by anyone nor even her husband.
