Daly Walker, a college student enlisted in the Vietnam war from 1967 to 1968, as a field doctor for a large group of comrades. This time during the war was difficult for Walker because he never had time to finish all of his medical training. Once the war ended, Walker went back to medical school and received his Bachelor's degree at Ohio Wesleyan University, then proceeded to get his Medical Degree from Indiana University. Walker went to the University of Wisconsin to practice surgery and to finish what he had started. He practiced surgery for thirty five years in Columbus, Indiana and even and won a bronze star from his work as a surgeon during the war. After retirement, Walker began writing short stories like “Shadows” and “I am the grass.” Many of Walker’s short stories reside on the list as some of the best short stories in America, thus, he has won awards from these said writings (Ibis n.pag). …show more content…
After the war ends, the character goes back to Vietnam alongside of Operation Smile, a group of surgeons who repair childrens’ cleft lips. During this experience, he meets Doctor Lieh Viet Dihn, a Retired Vietnamese war veteran. During the war, Dr. Dihn got captured and tortured, having his thumbs chopped off. Because of these events, Dr. Dihn asks the surgeon to surgically remove his big toe to replace his thumbs (Walker 318-325).
