I scarred over and it kept hurting. I would never fit. But, really, I didn't want to fit. That's why it was hard.” This quote was written by Laurie Halse Anderson, author of the book Twisted. Teenagers and even adults around the world feel as though they have to fit in and conform to the norm. Teenagers especially feel as though their best is never good enough and that they can never live up to the standards set by their peers. Throughout history, there have been struggles of people who want to fit in or people who believe that the only way to escape the criticism of others is to resort to suicide. One example is the fight for LGBT rights and their struggle for their own individuality and to fit in with everyone else. In the book Twisted, Tyler Miller wants to stop being seen as the nerd boy and the freak. Tyler wants equality within his school and his life. Another example, is the suicides of teenagers around the world who are stressed about school, friendships, or something that makes them feel that life is impossible. Tyler continuously thinks that suicide would make the world better. “I will pull the trigger and a bullet will rip through my skull at eight hundred miles an hour. I will pull this trigger and my brains will detonate. I will pull this trigger and fall.” This quote shows that Tyler is obsessed with dying because he can't take it anymore. This book relates to the people of the future because there will always be that pit in people's stomachs that makes them feel desperate and it will lead to inevitable death. These people will always be around
