Remmer, Kamryn Mr. Shipp English 1, Block 1 5/24/2023 Figurative Language And Literary Devices In I Have A Dream In the speech “I Have A Dream,” there are multiple uses of figurative language and literary devices. But today, I will be talking about three uses of figurative language and literary devices I found. One being repetition:when a word is being used several times. Like how he used the phrase "let freedom ring." multiple times. The other two are an anaphora: the repetition of a phrase at the beginning of sentences. Like how he used “Now is the time…” and “I have a dream,” multiple times in his speech. The phrase "let freedom ring," is used because, MLK is trying to tell people that if they freedom then everyone needs to agree to let freedom ring.. The phrase “Now is the time…” is used in Mlk’s speech because blacks have been waiting years and years to have their freedom. But even though they technically are “Free” they aren't treated as so. Blacks were treated very wrong, they were separated from whites from almost everything almost everywhere. But this wasn't fair to them because of how long they fought to finally have freedom. But when they actually get it they are basically thrown to the side and treated like they're worth nothing. So Mlk repeats “Now is the time…” because it was the time for blacks to finally get what they deserved. It was time for blacks to finally be able to go to school with non colored people. It was time for blacks to finally be able to walk into a restaurant and not be refused service because of the color of their skin. Mlk repeats this phrase over and over and over again but for a good cause. He definitely got the attention of the thousands of people in the crowd's attention with this because him saying it multiple times makes people pay more attention to the words he is saying rather than not listening at
