Purpose, Emotion, and Logic The Gettysburg Address and the I Have a Dream speech are alike in many ways. In purpose, emotion, and logic, there are many similarities. The purpose of both passages, have a very very similar meaning. Men died for equality, men died for freedom, men died for the American Dream, men died for us, all of us. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. died for the same things, equality, freedom, the American Dream, and for us. Purpose, the purpose between both speeches are almost exactly the same. The purpose in both speeches deals with inequality of races. “... Our fathers brought forth on this continent...dedicated to the proposition that all men were created equal”. In a larger sense, we cannot dedicate-we cannot consecrate- we cannot hallow-this ground”.(Gettysburg Address) The men whom have fought there, died there, was the only thing strong enough to change the history of the ground. “It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus so far nobly advanced”.(Gettysburg Address) Us, we have to be dedicated to finish the work that the soldiers started. They started the rights for freedom, and we have to keep pushing, keep it going. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character”.(I have a dream) Color should not matter, we should not judge people because they are of color. Treat others how you want to be treated, meaning, be kind towards others. Do not judge in general, but mostly, if you judge it better be because of their character and not of their
