This is a story about a young intelligent kid whose test scores were switched by accident with another kid whose last name is coincidently the same as his. Rose attended two years of Italian Schooling and now is set down a dead end path through the vocational education track. Throughout the story you can see Rose change his mindset about school. From school being an importance to not caring about school anymore. In the story “I just want to be average” a young kid is by the name of Mike Rose and shows that a simple mix-up in test scores almost ruined his future and set him down a dead end path. Mike Rose test scores got mixed up with another kid who had the same last name as his. Rose started to change the way he speaks to where he acts high just so he can avoid being judged by others for not knowing a specific thing. “It is a powerful and effective defense- it neutralizes the insult and the frustration of being a vocational kid and, when perfected it drives teachers up the wall.” Pg 128 Roses time in the vocational track didn’t benefit him educationally since he was already ahead of the kids within the program he was fed repetitive information that he already learned. “Let me try to explain how it feels to see again and again material you should once have learned but didn’t.” Pg 129 His time in the vocational education track showed him how to manipulate the system, and led him to be more and more disrespectful. Soon after the mistake was caught after a couple years within the system Rose was already affected by the environment of the program that he became undisciplined, and far behind than he should be in
