Jackie Robison was born in Cairo, Georgia, on January 31, 1919. He was the youngest of five children, and was raised in poverty. He attended John Muir High School, where he was an excellent athlete and played four sports: football, track, football, and baseball. He was named the region 's Most Valuable Player in baseball in 1938. Jackie continued his education at the University of California where he was the university’s first student to succeed in four sports.
Jackie Robinson is an interesting character in the book I Never Had It Made. He displays several qualities which make him an interesting character. Jackie is mentally strong. This is evident throughout the book from the verbal abuse in baseball to the encounters with racist people everywhere he goes. Jackie is also a trailblazer.
In 1910, Branch Rickey coached a college team with one black player. That player, Charley Thomas, was refused a hotel room with the team and had to sleep on a cot in Mr. Rickey’s room. Charley was emotionally distressed and he could not sleep. He tried to scratch off the skin of his own hands, wishing he were white, so he would feel as good as anybody.

Robinson was the first negro ball-player to play on a Major League Ball Club, while this was an enormous accomplishment for all negro ball-players, it took its toll on Jackie.
