In 1939 WW2 was just beginning to flare up and countries were beginning to join the fight against the Nazis and their powers. Countries that had power began to engage against Germany in full force, all but America. It wasn’t until 1941 that they joined, but why did they wait this long and what pushed them over the edge?
The United States was a neutral country in WW2. This was due to the lack of appeal and need to fight in it. Though, this all was true only until a partly cloudy morning on Sunday, December 7, 1941, from 7:55 to 9:45 AM.
The attack was launched from aircraft carriers 275 miles North of Hawaii. These attackers were headed toward a small island called Ford island. This is within the bay of Honolulu, Hawaii. This place was called Pearl Harbor, a US army base used to control the Pacific sea and skies.
The Japanese bombers, divers, and kamikaze planes were bombing the US base vigorously. With 2 waves of forces planned by Japanese leader Mitsuo Fuchida, Husband E. Kimmel (Commander and Chief) couldn’t figure out what to do to prevent the repeated bombs that President Franklin D. Roosevelt had received no warning about. Less than 2 months earlier the US had stopped letting Japanese petroleum ships through our waters and they even cut off trade ships. This was a big problem for Japan since they were already in WW2. Without this income, they couldn't support their military. This caused them to panic and get desperate. After the murder of over 2300 soldiers, 180 aircraft, and 2 sunken ships, the US was furious and joined WW2 in order to prevent more problems and help stop the global threat of the Nazis.
