IDEAS ACT In the mid- and late-1970s the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was ratified which amended the Rehabilitation Act to include funding for independent living centers and the formation of the National Council on Disability under the U.S. Department of Education. IDEA legislation ensures education to meet the students’ needs. When the act was reauthorized, congress approved amendments that would make the IDEA Act stronger by strengthening the role of the parents’ access to the general education curriculum and reforms; focusing on teaching and learning while reducing unnecessary paperwork requirements. The act has influenced people with special needs in the workforce. The purpose of the act is not to get people ready to work, instead it is to get people to work. The act accepts the idea that people with disabilities should be treated fairly in the workforce, since working an important part for an adult in society. For examples, some employers are led to believe that employees with disabilities will be absent more than an employee with no disabilities. But, studies have shown that employees with intellectual disabilities are not absent more times than an employee with no disability.
