The viewpoint of the current regulations for Initial Entry Training (IET) Soldiers is largely influenced by the words of MG John M. Schofield. In his speech he would touch on several topics that he found to be of great concern with the treatment of new recruits. “The discipline which makes the soldiers of a free country reliable in battle is not to be gained by harsh or tyrannical treatment” (Mann; AR 350-6). At issue is the psychological treatment of the trainees. In sense, they are a blank canvas. To properly instill and to have the long lasting effect of the Army Values, great care must be taken to ensure that the introduction and the indoctrination of new Soldiers into the culture of the US Army begins with the proper amount of stresses and psychological adjustments in order to achieve the desired result, being of a Soldier who does live up to the Army Values and exhibits the qualities of professional Soldier who is able to see other Soldiers as equals and to gage them by their accomplishments rather than their difference as a personal or individual level.
