In their essay “ISIS committed genocide: Are the gloves off?”, Blank and Corn portray the killings in Syria and Iraq as a genocide. They stated how the terrorist group, ISIS, targets and kills Yazidis and other minority groups in the Middle East. Blank and Corn explained that congress declared the atrocities in Syria and Iraq as genocide, but if congress creates a resolution it would only try to change the ideology about the killings rather than give them the right to take action upon the genocide. The essay expresses the definition of genocide so that people can decide the classification of the killings. If the massacres classify as genocide, the countries are obligated to prevent the genocide and punish criminals. The essay relates to the class material because we recently ended our unit about World War II and genocides. In class we discussed other recent genocides; therefore, this essay relates to what we talked about in class. The other day in the class learned about the war in Syria which led to 250,000 deaths. After the war, the terrorist group, ISIL (ISIS) formed. ISIS is beginning to get global attention after multiple terrorist attacks in the US and Europe.
