Lamonte Womack HUM 1100 Culbertson Unit 3 Essay Iago’s Soliloquy Soliloquy as a stage device is found in literature work and especially in plays and novels. William Shakespeare has widely used soliloquy in his play, Othello. Iago has been presented as a character who reveals his role and thoughts to the audience through soliloquy. Soliloquy as a literal style allows the audience to evaluate characters without necessarily offering other characters an opportunity to analyze their actions (Kerrigan, 2016). Iago is a vengeful person who pretends to be a friend to Othello, and Shakespeare paints this character through soliloquy. Soliloquy is revealed in Act one; scene iii-Iago reveals his secret intentions of vengeance against Othello for promoting a junior soldier over him to the prestigious lieutenant position. It is out of bitterness for the promotion and jealousy over Desdemona. When he failed to receive the much-expected promotion, he realized that it was as well impossible to get Desdemona. His sound motivation to execute he planned that he wasn’t “loved” BY Othello, a form he wasn’t included in his trusted inner team. This scene is very important for various reasons. First, it marks Iago’s first success. This is through Cassio’s demotion. Secondly, it reveals Iago is much thrilled by his villainy and with himself. His love is hidden in his deep hypocrisy. Thirdly, it reveals his wicked plans of bringing down his colleagues due to jealousy and bitterness. Finally, the scene comes to an end through Iago switching the mind of Othello, which he puts into tormenting this, he was to make Emilia persuade Desdemona to help Cassio, and then he would create a scene where Othello would see Cassio and Desdemona together (Kerrigan, 2016). This would spark Othello’s jealousy, and this would serve as enough 3evidence that Cassio was indeed sleeping with
