Ian Gallagher is a fictional character from the popular TV show Shameless, which has gained a cult following for its portrayal of the everyday struggles of working-class families in Chicago. The character of Ian Gallagher is portrayed by actor Cameron Monaghan, and his story arc over the course of the series has revolved around his struggle with bipolar disorder. This paper will examine Ian Gallagher's character and his portrayal of bipolar disorder, as well as the show's treatment of mental illness.
