The novel Curious, written by Ian Leslie explains the desire to know more and why your future depends on you to be curious. A quote that stood out was, “We spend our entire lives at the entrance of a cave, caught between the safety of the familiar and the yearning for novelty, the peace of home and the thrill of travel, the tonic and dominant chords” (Leslie 42). The first line of this passage Leslie states we spend all this time standing at the entrance unsure if we are ready to explore or if we are going to stand back and watch. Since the beginning, I have been extremely involved in both basketball and softball on campus. Both these teams have created a secure and safe place to go to when the stress of college is upon me. Although it has only been a few months, it is a family atmosphere where we can be curious as we learn about each other lives. Also while spending time with my teammates, I became very close to them. This allowed me to step into my comfort zone and be loud and goofy with them. Just like Leslie states we are caught between the familiar and the yearning for novelty, once I realized we all had sports in common and that was a familiar topic to me, I became even more invested in my teammates. Now for the educational portion at Monmouth College, I have been extremely reserved and quite with my peers in a classroom. The quote I chose at the beginning of my essay explains just how I have reacted over the last few months. Joining the conversation and diving into classroom discussions has been rather hard due to many of my insecurities.
