The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to become a future journeyman electrician, they must be willing to work hard and have in interest in the construction field. The IBEW apprenticeship programs are designed to have students go to school and work at the same time. This allows students to make a living, complete the education requirements needed to become a licensed electrician and have learned valuable job experience. There are a number of steps in becoming a successful union worker including education, work experience and certification after school. When a student gets accepted into IBEW they start you working with one of their companies in July till school starts. When they work an apprentice usually would just get tools of other works and watch what they’re doing then slowly they will ask them to do simple task like bending conduit and install a three way switch into the wall while they work on something else. During school they are going to need to learn how to work on their own. So when starting out work, an average wage one gets is usually eight to eleven dollars an hour. After every six months or a certain amount of hours to work, they give a two to three dollars raise. Even though that doesn’t seem like a lot they also give you benefits, the same benefits as someone who work there for thirty years. So it adds another nine dollar to what they already get.
