Odysseus’s goal is to reach his home land Ithica where he will be reunited with his family and restore his kingdom. After ten years of war, he finally sets sail to return. The forces along the way make Odysseus’s journey challenging and at times, overwhelming as he tries to reach home. Internal and external forces dramatically change the long, arduous trek for Odysseus and his crew. Despite all these forces, external conflicts like monsters and temptation hinder Odysseus’s journey more than internal forces do.
The majority of this book is his journey up the mountain. I feel this book overall shows the types of conflicts and survival they had to go through during his journey. All of the characters faced different types of survival. I am going to talk about how they had to overcome natural conflict. ¨I timed my moves between various blasts of wind, which were becoming more frequent the higher I climbed.¨
He did this mainly by using strategies such as foreshadowing, similes, metaphors, and rhyme schemes. Odysseus was an incredible hero who went on an incredible journey. He used his skills and strength to survive monsters, loneliness, and Poseidon's fury; though there were many like him in different stories. In the Odyssey by Homer and O’ Brother Where Art Thou by Ethan and Joel Coen shared an amazing hero, Odysseus and Ulysses. Though most importantly their journey and the challenges that came along with it, one being the temptress that could have cost them their lives. There were many comparisons between both of these fascinating stories, though the thing that captivates people the most is their incredible journeys.
Sundiata and The Odyssey are two out of the many great great orally told tales in all of mankind history. Odysseus is cruel and quick to anger, arrogant, and does not truly win in the end. Along with the Hero’s journey, there is another journey that is not talked about. The villain’s journey is a parallel to the hero’s journey but usually ends the inverse of the Hero’s journey. Both hero and villain experience a call to adventure with guidance along the way.
Daedalus and Icarus both try doing something they know no human is able to do. By them trying to escape, it had consequences no one expected. Icarus had fell below and drowned. It was appalling. He emphasized trying to fly and caused his son’s death, he never returned to bury him, and he didn’t show that he cared much for his son.
In literature, a common process for the protagonist to go through is to go on a journey in order for them to develop as a character and to further the story as a whole. This idea of a character’s journey is notably seen in Homer’s The Odyssey, Dante’s Inferno, and Voltaire’s Candide. All three of these texts depict not only the protagonist going through a journey, but they also depict in very different ways these characters use their abilities to overcome obstacles in their path and learn from their mistakes to show their individual character development. When they leave Aeolus give them a far west wind and a bag holding all unfavorable stormy winds. While they were within sight of home the ship crew decides to open the bag of stormy winds thinking it was a bag of gold and it blows them back to the island of Aeolus. Since they were at point one again the head to Aeaea, where they split up, Odysseus and half of the crew stay on the ship while Eurylochus and the rest go on land. While on land Eurylochus and the crew with him encounter the witch, Circe and she ends up
The next day the priest has set up an escape for them by a friends’ plane. Rebels find them again and they nearly escape the rebels. They fly to Brazil and their wounds are tended to and planes are booked to go home. Will becomes unafraid of death and his situation of the possibility of his parents fighting and divorce. I really enjoyed this book due to the suspense and action.
I looked out the window, expecting to see the runaway crew member but instead I saw a different man who I immediately recognized as Odysseus. My spirits rose because I knew he was smarter than the others. Once again I lured him into my palace and offered him food and wine, which he refused. He only wanted to get his men returned to their original forms and to continue his journey to Ithaca with them by his side. When I finally convinced him to drink my wine, he was not affected by it.
