NWA and How They Overcome Racism To some people, music is a source of joy or a source of intense happiness, whereas to others it is a source of power with an underlying message that speaks to more than just emotions. Many people unintentionally ignore the message behind the music they listen to because they simply want to vibe to the melody and rhythm. Often times people disregard the importance of the music and the real reason it was created. Niggaz Wit Attitudes (N.W.A.) was a rap group that formed in Los Angeles at the end of the 80s and lasted through the early 90s. In one of their most famous songs (“Gangsta Gangsta”) from their album Straight Outta Compton, rapper Ice Cube opens the song with “Here's a little somethin' about a nigga like me, Never should've been let out the penitentiary …” (NWA “Gangsta Gangsta”). Ice Cube continues with “Since I was a youth, I smoked weed out, Now I'm the mothafucka that you read about (NWA “Gangsta Gangsta”). An argument is hard to derive because it appears as solely a promotion of random violence. In reality, when his words are broken down it becomes clearer that what he is saying holds more value than just an advocation of violence. Ice Cube opened the song in the way he did because he wanted to propagate thought from the very beginning of the track. During these words, the song contains a very loud dynamic, it is almost as if Ice Cube is screaming the first two lines. The melody of the song is incredibly upbeat and contains a lot of positivity, perhaps transcending the idea of a better listening experience and going as far as to be hopeful because they wish to create and see change.
