The Galloping Hessian of the Hollow is the personification of the malicious and his metaphysical powers – the devil. His characterization is described very strongly: "it stirred not, but seemed gathered up in te gloom, like some gigantic monster ready to spring upon the traveler" Also , the tulip-tree is described as a supernatural element: "towered like a giant above all the other trees of the neighborhood, and formed a king of landmark. Its limbs were gnarled and fantastic, large enough to form trunks for ordinary trees, twisting down almost to te eart, and rising again into the air" All of his characters have fixed and leveled traits, that undergo no changes throughout the story, having only a few distinctive attributes. Katrina Van Tassel has quite a pleasent appearance and is very flirty, beeing generally admired by the local men. Except for the classical archetype of a young, beautiful maiden, there are no direct details of what is happening in her mind apart from the narrator's descripitons. The most thorough depiction of the young woman is when she is first presented to the reader: She was a blooming lass of fresh eighteen; plump as a partridge; ripe and melting and rosy cheeked as one of her father's peaches, and universally famed, not merely for her beauty, but her vast expectations. She was withal a little of a coquette, as might be perceived even in her dress, which was a mixture of ancient and modern fashions, as most suited to set off her charms. She wore the ornaments of pure yellow gold, which her great-great-grandmo ther had brought over from Saardam, the tempting stomacher of the olden time; and withal a provokingly short petticoat, to display the prettiest foot and ankle in the country
