Accomplishments of Ida B. Wells Ida B. Wells once said “The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.” Wells was a journalist and a civil rights activist. She co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and she was also in other groups that fought for equal rights for people who were of color. She brought injustices to life through her writing. She is important to history and should be celebrated during Black History Month because she risked her life fighting for justice for African Americans. Wells was born on July 16, 2023 in Holly Springs, Mississippi. She was born enslaved but in 1865, 3 years after she was born slavery was abolished and the Wells family was free. Her words helped to alert people about lynching of African Americans in the South and it helped alert people of African Americans getting discriminated. She started by becoming a journalist who spoke about racism and politics. After her friend died of lynching though she became commited to writing about horrors of victims. A ton of her articles were published in Black newspapers and bulletins. Some of them were the New York Age and the Chicago Conservator. In 1889 she became part owner of a publication called the Memphis Free Speech and Headlight. She used her writing to show poor treatment of Black Americans. In 1892 she started a anti-lynching campain and she got tired of Black Americans getting killed. She then wrote several articles talking about the murder of three men. She travelled and she heard tons of stories about lynchings. She was risking her life during this time since she was writing what she thought was right. In 1896 she then co-founded a anti-lynching campaign called the NACWC. She stood up for lynching and the discrimination of Black Americans. She helped the world become a better place through her writing and speeches. She risked her life just to help other people because she stood up for what was right. I have always wanted to contribute something really good to the world and this determined me to start trying. After learning about her it makes me think that not everything is about me and that I need to be considerate of others too. Overall Ida B. Wells stood up for what she believed in and she made a very positive impact on the
