Not many people realize that Eleanor Roosevelt was much more than being the First Lady of the United States. When President Roosevelt was diagnosed with polio, Mrs. Roosevelt stayed by his side and got more involved with the State of Democratic Committee. By becoming more involved, she expanded the duties that First Lady of the United States had to uphold. (whitehouse.gov). Mrs. Roosevelt has always been an activist for social justice, prior to living in the White House. She helped the poor at the Rivington Street Settlement House by trying to make circumstances better for WW1 veterans. She also fought for women’s rights; by which she inspired others to be part of political process since women recently was given the right to vote. Wells; who was the daughter of former slaves. That didn’t stop her from finding success in her life, she attended school to the tender age of sixteen because of the deaths of her parents and sibling. In 1892, she got inspiration to write her first article in “Memphis Free Speech and Headlight” newspaper when she heard that three innocent black store owners were lynched. She continued to publish her works, even though she was threatened and her office was destroyed. Her article that caused major movement for blacks was the article she wrote on that blacks leave and move west away from the towns of murderers.
