This article also showed the long term effects of sexual assault, by showing how terrible the girl’s life way following the assault (Jaquiss).

Researching her taught me that something you do that you might consider small or usual may change your life and your future. Facts seemed lost and reporters wrote sensational articles in order to sell newspapers. One reporter however broke the norms, Ida.
During industrialization many problems were created that had to be fixed during the Progressive Era. Most of these problems were brought out into the light by muckrakers by using novels and political cartoons. After the people realized what was happening many laws were created to help fix these problems. One of the most famous muckrakers is Upton Sinclair, who wrote the novel, The Jungle.
One of the well-known figures is Harriet Jacobs. Just Like Frederick Douglass, she was born a slave in 1813 in North Carolina. She had the opportunity to be educated by her owner. Jacobs left to a relative afther the death of the woman who owned her. She suffered from the sexual abuse of her master when she was a teenager.
What is a muckraker? Muckrakers were investigative journalists who wrote exposés about corruption in politics and business. In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt made a speech called “The Man with the Muck Rake”, about investigative journalists. “To assail the great and admitted evils of our political and industrial life with such crude and sweeping generalizations as to include decent men in the general condemnation means the searing of the public conscience”. He began calling these types of writers muckrakers.

By one guess of 100,000 slaves make a run from enslavement in the South between 1810 and 1850.The Underground Railroad was a system of classified passages and secure homes used by 19th-century slaves of African ancestors in the United States to make a run to free states and Canada with the help of abolitionists and colleagues who were thoughtful to their purpose. In the Progressive Era, there were many problems that the American people faced. America was broken, unjust, and cruel during that era. The people became acocomuomed to the corruption, horrible living conditions,and terrible working and safety conditions. The vast number of problems; however, were solved by what we call-- muckrakers, who then with the help of others came to bring about a new laws.
Harriet Tubman mostly known for her abolitionist work was a very influential woman that saved many slaves’ lives. She was born into slavery with siblings and parents by her side. She died on March 10, 1913, but is still remembered for all of her work. Harriet Tubman had a hard life in slavery, worked in the Civil War, rescued slaves, worked on the underground railroad and can be compared to Nat Turner who also lived in the period of time when there was slavery. First off, Harriet Tubman was a slave that suffered many beatings and punishments for her actions that would cause her to have seizures in her later life.
Harriet Tubman was a woman who changed the course of history by fighting against slavery throughout her entire life. Most modern-day individuals know her for conducting the Underground Railroad and helping hundreds of enslaved people escape from their captors. She went on several perilous journeys to southern plantations despite the heavy reward sum that plantation owners eventually placed on her head. Her courage and readiness to risk her own capture allowed many to live better lives in the North. However, conducting the Underground Railroad was not the only way she contributed to the abolition of slavery.
Donna Tartt’s The Secret History tells the story of Richard Papen’s transfer from a small college in his hometown Plano, California, to an elite college in Vermont, Hampden College. During his first week, he becomes obsessively captivated by the five students in a highly selective Greek class and goes to extreme lengths to be accepted by the group’s members Henry Winter, Bunny Corcoran, Francis Abernathy, twins Charles and Camilla Macaulay, and their teacher Julian Morrow. This obsession and desire to please causes Richard’s involvement in two murders that distort his idea of morality. The novel is best analyzed by applying psychoanalytical and feminist theory to the characters with critical articles providing additional information and showing a different perspective. I have chosen to analyze the narrator, Richard Papen, the group leader, Henry Winter, and the only major female character, Camilla Macaulay.
