She attended Allegheny College and was the only woman in her graduating class. She studied biology in the beginning but then had a growing interest in writing. (The Biography.com editors, "Ida Tarbell Biography") She was a muckraker, and an investigative reporter, she was also one of the pioneers in the field of journalism.
How often are women admirable? Ellen Ochoa, An hispanic engineer, astronaut, and now a director of the Johnson Space Center, is one of the most admirable persons. In the time between the 1890s and 1920s, America experienced a massive amount of growth. People in poverty-stricken, overcrowded cities suffered greatly. In big cities, politicians kept power using several political machines. Companies created monopolies and controlled the nation’s economy. Many Americans were concerned about this, and believed that great change was needed in society to protect everyday people.
James Garrett is one of the founding members to kickstart the Black Student Union at San Francisco State. He is sixty-seven and a retired lawyer/dean of instruction at what is now Berkeley City College. As a member of the SNCC as well as CORE for six consecutive years, he originally arrived as a student upon the campus but had hopes for a greater change. Garrett hoped to move the Black Student Movement from the larger community to a more focused, younger group within a campus setting. He made a bet with former members of the SNCC that his ultimate goal was to build a Black Student Movement on a predominately white campus.

Ida Bell Wells-Barnett commonly known as Ida B Wells was one of the nation 's most vocal anti-lynch activist of her time.(Steptoe) It all started when three of her African American friends were lynched after they opened up a store, the People’s Grocery, which competed well with a white owned grocery store nearby. A white mob attacked the People’s Grocery and three white men were injured, the owners of the store were then jailed when they were later broken out and lynched. This infuriated Wells and she wrote after the incident urging African Americans to leave Memphis, “There is, therefore, only one thing left to do; save our money and leave a town which will neither protect our lives and property, nor give us a fair trial in the courts, but takes us out and murders us in cold blood when accused by white persons.” This caused some 6,000 African-Americans to leave Memphis while others started boycotts on white businesses.(Wikipedia)
Dubois. Dubois was an incredibly intelligent African American and was also one of the founders of the NAACP. Dubois wanted full rights for African Americans and wouldn’t be satisfied with partial rights. With his position in the NAACP and editor of its journal, “The Crisis”, Dubois had a lot of influence. He definitely put his influence to good use in arguing against the Plessy vs. Ferguson decision, which stated that segregation was legal as long as both races had equal opportunities.
The Little Rock nine had strength and courage to apply for an all white school despite on others that may not agree on having black students in their community, even though one was expelled and some not graduated they all represent a mark of achievement in black history they symbolized hope of integrating other public schools and maybe the world. They had words of wisdom from Martin Luther King Jr. explaining them he is aware of the mobs and Faubus and others trying to terminate there education, he gave explains how their action are unholy and to remain Christian to represent all of black people to show others how to properly act into these types of situations, and all integration in the future is upon them they must show who blacks are and how to correctly define us. However the school board, governors, and organization showed an abundance of resistance to the court ruling, they tried many protests and rallies to avoid the nine students in Little Rock. Although they all tried to stop the nine students from proper education, Little Rock Nine held their heads high and eventually were able to encounter human relations and graduate, the nine students us all how we are defined and we should not let anyone determine that for us depending on race, gender, or
Dr. Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, these are only a few people mentioned in class, but what about Claudette Colvin who nine months before Rosa Parks, decided not to get off the bus and was taken to jail, or Emmett Till who was 14 and brutally beaten and killed for whistling at a white woman. These are only a few who are not mentioned in our history books or classrooms. Students are taught mathematics, Science, World and American history because it is important. Black history is also important, it teaches the contribution African Americans have made in the past and continue making in the future.

W. E. B. Du Bois, sociologist and historian and one of the first African-Americans to receive a degree from Harvard. Du Bois accused Washington of limiting segregation and encouraging whites. He later on encouraged that talented black children have no less than university educations and professions. He fought that blacks should fight for there civil rights and make it known that they deserve more. Later, Du Bois created the Niagara Movement.
I’ve noticed that being an African American woman places me below the totem pole automatically, placing two strikes again me. However, as a black woman attending a Historically Black College/University, in my heart, I strive to seek academic excellence and create a lasting impression on the world…starting with the community around me. My traditional values are deeply rooted in love, honesty, integrity and the desire to serve. I strongly believe in “Love Your Neighbor as Yourself”. I believe I have great qualities to offer such an organization
