There has been much debate into how medieval authors define a good writer of history throughout the years, and the ideas and beliefs of authors during the medieval period would differ greatly from modern historians. There are a few different ways that medieval authors would define a ‘good’ writer of history, one of these ways is that the writing of history has a large emphasis on Christian theology and uses writing history to recognise the will of god. During the Middle Ages religion was a major aspect of most societies, a large majority of authors and historians during this period were often members of the clergy as literacy was relatively rare, and ‘every state in Europe encouraged the writing of official histories dominated by law-givers, saints and warrior kings of the past . One of the most notable authors based on Christian theology during the medieval period who was considered a good writer of history was Venerable Bede, who was an English monk born around 673 near the English monastery of Wearmouth who hoped to help people grow in the Christian faith through his writing. Bede was similar to many other medieval authors as he was adamant that recognising gods will was the primary task of the historian, he also believed that the task of history was to ‘fulfil providence and determine where exactly we were on the divine journey to the End of Days’.
