Frances Galton and James Cattell were two early psychologists keenly interested in the difference and similarities between people. Galton took great interest in the study of individual physical differences, such as hearing, strength, height and other physical characteristics (Tasker, 2000). James Castell’s interests were associated with both physical and mental measurements (Stam, 2003). Both men believed that the human population could be improved through selective breeding (Cohen, 2012). The dyad of Galton and Cattell was focused on the concept of collecting the data of the differences and similarities of individual (Cohen, 2012). Lewis Terman and Alfred Brinet work was focused on the testing of individuals for placement; their test measured what they deemed as intelligence (Cohen, 2012).

I believe the individual that had the greatest influence on the subject of psychology would be James Cattell. His early insight into the concept of developing empirical data was instrumental in the advancement of psychology as a true science. He collected huge quantities of data, similarly to Galton, that for the most part were not very valuable, however he did understand the importance of data collection and publication of that data for review (Stam, 2003).
