DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY The research design adopted in this study applied a combination of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods. The merging of strategies was used to ensure that the research problem is fully addressed. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact that Ethnic Studies classes have on high school students in rural education. This research addressed the question: what are the academic and social impacts of Ethnic Studies classes on high school students in rural communities? The purpose of this study was to analyze and identify the impact of Ethnic Studies classes on high school students in rural education, using the Coachella Valley Unified School District high school students as the site and subjects of the study. The research question that guided the study is: what are the academic and social impacts of Ethnic Studies classes on high school students in rural communities? The quantitative research method was used to assess and identify the impact on student’s academic outcomes, while the qualitative research method was used to assess and identify the impact on student’s social outcome. (2014) highlights three areas to assess reliability as test-based reliability, inter-rate reliability, and internal consistency for quantitative research and trustworthiness confirmed by participants and credible sources for qualitative data. The limited sample data supporting the quantitative research method and the need for additional sources of information, such as observations and interviews, present a challenge in design when considering the reliability of this research study.
