Identity and Disempowerment in the United States Throughout the history of the United States there have been political and social divides between different groups of people, whether based on sexuality, race, ideologies, or nationality. Since the colonization and founding of our country we have made great progress in fighting racism and discrimination, but there will seemingly always be a lingering hostility. The very people that built the United States are the ones who are the most ostracized. Marginalization and discrimination in the United States is a problem that has always plagued the united states and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. For Immigrants and African Americans in the United States, prejudice and persecution are both sources of identity and discrimination. Starting from the early days of European colonization, indentured servants and African Americans were exploited through slavery. As horrible as it was the economic prosperity and success of the US was built on the back of foreigners. Since the founding of our country political figures have used fear of “the other” to scare us, divide us, and further their own agenda. Today certain orange, blond-haired politicians are seeking to divide us and label groups of people as “rapists”, “drug dealers”, or “terrorists”, but these tactics are nothing new. Race and Nationality will continue to be target of prejudice. But one of the reasons that the United States is the most powerful countries in the world is our diversity. We have people of every race and religion, we are the main hub of music and media because the sheer diversity of our culture.
