Masks may be used to hide a person’s true identity; however, the act cannot shield the personality, which shines through the cover. It is shown in Lord of the Flies that each main character possesses one strong personality trait and lacks other characteristics. Critics say, "It is possible to view the boys as representatives of various instincts or elements of their personalities. The catastrophe occurs because the qualities of intelligence, bravery, decency, organization, and insight are divided among Piggy, Jack, Ralph, and Simon. Each of them lacks some vital gift; none of them is a complete person." This can be proven through the experiences the characters have and the obstacles they have to overcome. However, it is hidden that Ralph lacks intelligence. From the very beginning, Ralph classifies himself as the leader and breaks the mass of boys into individual groups with specific jobs. For example, the choir acts as a group of hunters, and the twins maintain the fire. This character trait is critical to the development of the boys on the island; the boys require the organization Ralph provides in order to survive. In addition, Ralph demonstrates his important organizational skill by using conch shells as a symbol of organization and civilization. By coming up with this idea, Ralph further demonstrated how his leadership qualities could advance the group in this newfound society. In the novel, it states, "That’s what this shell’s called. I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking" (Golding 33). The organization is shown through the development of the conch shell. In the event that Jack teases and calls Piggy names, he further demonstrates the lack of decency he possesses towards others. Jack's lack of decency is demonstrated when he kills the mother pig, leaving the baby pigs to fend for themselves, ultimately leading to death. Jack and the other hunters exaggerate the death of the maternal pig, creating a chase to hunt her down. Although the boys are in need of food, the way they went about killing the mother pig is very traumatizing and shows a lack of remorse for the pigs. In addition to the lack of decency in his personality, Jack shows bravery when faced with any challenge. The most significant example of Jack showcasing his exceptional bravery is when he makes the decision to climb the mountain, knowing that's where the beast lies. In the novel, it states, "'If you don’t want to go on,’ said the voice sarcastically, ‘I’ll go up by myself" (Golding 120). Jack put himself in a challenging position by choosing whether to go up the mountain or admit to the fear they all felt resulting from the beast. This instance in
