In the Bell Jar, Esther Greenwood is my favorite character in the novel. Esther‘s cry for self-identity and self-worth flows throughout the novel; so relatable to teenagers in this day and time. Self-Identity is composed of self-assessments, such as personality attributes, knowledge of one’s skills and abilities, one’s occupation and hobbies, and awareness of one’s physical attributes. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath is based on an autobiographical of a young woman's search for identity that is eventually found through a mental breakdown. Because Esther Greenwood's aspirations are suppressed by traditional female roles, she tries to find herself through clearing her mind of these restraints society places upon women.
