There are five themes that exist in the world of popular music, these being: Listening, Identity, Technology, Business, and Centers and Peripheries. Listening is not the same as hearing as we hear everything at every waking hour, but we are not always listening. In the context of music, listening involves us actively thinking about a song. Now, when we listen, we often note both the broad and fine details of a song. Broad being that you know the genre of a song that you're listening to and the fine details may include something like noting a particular note in a riff. Listening to a song is essentially building a foundation of the song, whether or not that foundation is positive or analytical is on a person-to-person basis. Without listening, there is no music, just background noise.
Moving forward, Identity plays a critical role in popular music as it would not be as widespread as it is now and how it had been throughout its history without this idea. In many songs, people often relate or identify with a song. Whether it's about love, sorrow, or motivation, it connects. The earliest enjoyments of music were in the form of Sheet Music, then it had progressed to phonographic records, network radios, sound films, all the way up to modern day, where everything is digitally streamed across platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube. However, accessibility was not the only reason why technology had been important, advancements in audio technology and inventions of new instruments gave way to new genres of music.
