Like any artifact, comic books can be analyzed to find a culture’s ideology at the time it was created. Our Flag Comics, and the story of “The Unknown Soldier” is no expectation to this rule. By looking at its brightly colored pages and reading the narrative it is easy to determine what ideology was present in Americans’ minds. The issue of Our Flag Comics that I decided to look at was published in 1941 and represents many of the values that were present at that time, it even deals with the Nazis attacking England. In particular, the story of “The Unknown Soldier” has one ideology that stood out to me. The ideology that stood out to me in this comic book is that there were definite roles for women because they were seen as less capable and more emotional than men. While the men are out fighting, the women take care of the wounded soldiers or take care of the children. There are very few instances when a woman does something that is proactive. There is a woman who only makes one appearance in the comic book and in the panel that she is in, she is shown running from a German gas attack. Not only is she reacting to some that the male soldiers have done, but she screaming that she needs to save her children. The representation of women as care takers says that women are not able to function in a war setting because they are caring. Mrs. Jennings even takes on a caring role in “The Unknown Soldier.” She decides to join the Red Cross. There is even a scene where she is helping a wounded soldier. This is opposite from the men who fight and have power. The women’s role as caretakers, especially as nurses, is completely reactionary to what the men do. This is very symbolic to what the view of women was in America during the 1940s because women did not really have power. Everything they did was in relation to a
