Ideology is a relatively systematic body of ideas, attitudes, values, and perceptions, as well as, actual modes of thinking typical of a given class or group of people in a specific time and place.(Hess,1978). Within the Hollywood film industry lies ideologies embedded within the films and genres that those films for say classify under. Wether it follows the dominate ideological interest of that specific culture or neglects the monopolized view , there is always an underlying ideological origin. These tropes are shown through props, setting and character choice. She also draws connections between consistent plot frequently displayed throughout romantic comedies, this trope being “... Shumway’s basic ‘boy meets girl...’ plot” normally the scene is displayed as a defective meeting that in traditional romance movies would not be used to exhibit the perfect initial attraction. This evidence can also be supported by Billy Mernits quote “In romantic comedies, the real subject is the power of love. Love is not merely the catalyst for action in a romantic comedy, it is the shaper of the story arc. Although many romantic comedies seem to initially set up their protagonist's eventual mate as their antagonist, in most cases love itself is the antagonist.”. The display of humor and imperfect scenarios separate romantic comedies from traditional romance movies. It is from this separation that the development between traditional romance movies and romance comedies become identifiable. Aspects of traditional masculinity and the stereotypical femininity have shifted loosening up the once socially constructed ideal surrounding the topic and expectations. Director Paul Feig is a prime example of destroying the preconceived idea that women must remain poist,elegant and be ridden of imperfections at all times. Throughout his film Bridemaids (2011) Feig exhibits a scene that romance comedy and society in general previously would of identified as unacceptable.This challenges the dominate betrayal of women across film.As shown the scene depicts the traditional wedding organisation scene motif but with a bit of a unexpected twist Feig uses a wide variety of camera angles so the audience can perceive the scene from all angles. The song drastically changes the tone of the scene giving it a more upbeat feel. The turn for a more realistic portray on gender and character stereotypes is one of the key developments of the Romantic comedy
