Advanced Technological Surveillance and Privacy Nowadays, the world is impossible to have a complete privacy since the changes of technological surveillance are used to invade people's privacy, people are not aware of being observed by the government or others. There are two articles that discusses the progresses and the use of technological surveillance. First, “Trading Liberty for Illusions,” (2002) by Wendy Kaminer who is a lawyer and who has written several books, including Sleeping with Extra-Terrestrials. Second, “If Looks Could Kill,” (2010) by The Economist which is an English magazine that can combine thoughts between science and technology. Kaminer (2002) argues about the security policies that are invading people’s rights because of the struggles that the government use to catch the suspect by using surveillance technologies. On the other hand, The Economist (2010) discuss the advancements of the surveillance technologies. Both articles discusses people privacy, and they use some strategies. For instance, language, expert opinion, tone, ethos and logos. Thus, The Economist (2010) uses a strategy which is counter argument which could make their argument more convincing. …show more content…

Kaminer (2002) starts her article with a strong statement which is, “Only a fool with no sense” (p. 397). As she begins with these shocking words which may not be accepted by her readers because what she meant is that maybe the reader is a fool if he does not get the concept, or if she does not understand the idea of her article then they are fools. However, The Economist (2010) starts their article by complaining about the boring work such as monitoring surveillance cameras. They begins with this kind of rhetorical statement to make the readers think about the truth of the tedious
