How Igor Sikorsky impacted aviation The person i have choosen for my Aviation Technologies research paper is Igor Sikorsky. I chose him because he is somebody i have never heard of before and he and his accomplishments helped further the aviation field greatly. He designed and flew some of the earliest functional helicopters and flew the first 4 engine aircraft. He has accomplished more but those will be discussed later in this paper. Another reason i chose Igor Sikorsky is to further my knowledge on aviation history and advancement, and to give myself a little bit of a challenge. Igor has many accomplishments and firsts, among those are designing and flying the first 4 engine aircraft, and making the first functional helicopter. These things are so important that he is apart of the National Aviation Hall of Fame. which in my opinion is kind of a big deal. He left following the Bolshevik Revolution, which gave power to people like Stalin. As a young man he left russia to pursue his career in engineering, in France. It wasn't until later that he began designing his own aircraft. After some time he left for New York, here he was influenced by others to pursue aircraft design, founding the company “Sikorsky Aero Engineering Corporation”. This was started on a chicken farm on long island. In the company's early years he made twin engine seaplanes, since airports at the time were scarce. As more time passed, more and more people ordered his planes, so he moved to a factory in connecticut and renamed the company to “Sikorsky Aviation Company”.
