What is belonging? How do we feel like we belong? Hi, my name is Ella Hughes and this morning I will be exploring the meaning of belonging and how it is displayed in the novel ‘Deadly Unna?’ written by Phillip Gwynne. In his award-winning novel, he strategically incorporated key events from his childhood into his novel, an example of this is that Blacky grows up in a small town with eight siblings in South Australia, while Phillip Gwynne grew up in a small fishing village with eight siblings in Melbourne. The book ‘Deadly Unna?’ is based off the small interracial friendship of two Aussie Rules Football teammates, Blacky, otherwise known as Gary Black, a white 14 year old boy who lived on the port with the ‘goonyas’ also referred to as the white population, he grew up as a child of 8 also living with his loving but highly ovwerworked mother and his verbally abusive, alcoholic father.
Everyone faces problems everyday. It is part of life. As well as trying to figure out who you are. The challenges you face help shape who you are. As for Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston, she decided to share her story.
Knowing is good, but knowing all is better. Based on an actual incident, Gary Paulsen's book Nightjohn showcases this life lesson. In the story young Sarny, a slave, is taught to read and write by a fellow slave, John. She knows that as a slave that reading is dangerous. But she takes that chance, because she knows wisdom is sharper than any weapon.
Helen Keller once stated, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of the trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved” (Helen Keller Quotes). In the novel Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand, the author visualizes Louie Zamperini’s experiences in the war and what he does to diminish the obstacles that faced him. Through Louie’s conflicts he builds his character from the atrocities he endured. In doing so he grows and develops as a person and learns the value of life.
Deadly Unna by Phillip Gwynne explores racial issues directed at the Indigenous Australians. Gwynne’s story is based on events that occurred in the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. This book clearly shows that Australia is not the land of the fair go for certain demographics, while other demographics do experience Australia as the land of the fair go. People who have money will experience Australia as the land of the fair go, but the people who do not will not be able to experience Australia as a land of equal opportunity. Indigenous Australians are also included in the demographic of people who cannot experience Australia as the land of the fair go.
“Is fate getting what you deserve, or deserving what you get?” (Jodi Picoult). Ethan Frome, written by Edith Wharton in 1911, embodies this quote. In Ethan Frome, all three main characters, Ethan, Mattie and Zeena have made decisions that will affect the rest of their lives. Ethan and Mattie had an inappropriate relationship behind Ethans significant other, Zeena 's, back which caused each of them to be emotionally distraught.
“Who, after all, speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?” This quote was spoken on August 22, 1939 by Adolf Hitler over 20 years after the Armenian Genocide took place. Adolf Hitler then went on to plan and lead one of the biggest and most widespread human massacres of all time, The Holocaust. Adolf Hitler believed that no one would notice the Holocaust because no one had taken much interest in the Armenian Genocide. The historical fiction book Forgotten Fire, by Adam Bagdasarian, tells the story of a boy named Vahan Kenderian who lived through the Armenian Genocide.
Legend, by Marie Lu, is a book about a Day, the most wanted criminal in the area and June, the greatest spy prodigy at just 15 years old. Throughout the book, these two face adversity and the struggle for the two are quite stress-bearing. When a major incident occurs, all the fingers point to Day for the cause of the incident. Day faces a tough uphill battle to claim innocence while June hunts him down. The two don’t even realize what they had gotten themselves into with a few key decisions that play a tremendous role in the following events each respectable being had made.
Elie and his family are being transported to Auschwitz in a cattle car. Among the eighty people stuffed inside was a woman, Mrs. Schächter. Her family except for her ten-year-old son. Most likely suffering from Dehydration, she begins to scream of a fire every night. The Quote is the results of what happened when the others in the car finally have enough of her hallucinations.
“In China, everybody dreamed about Kweilin. And when I arrived, I realized how shabby my dreams were, how poor my thoughts.” pg 8. (The Joy Luck Club Ch 1) In this story what’s happening is the mom finding out how Kweilin is a beautiful place that she came because of her husband thinking it would be safe to live here.
William's quotes from the poem, "The Broken Tower" by Hart Crane, "and so it was that I entered the broken world to trace the visionary company of love it's voice". The use of this poem helps to express Williams' choice of theme in "A Streetcar Named Desire"; the theme of brokenness. Blanche has entered a broken world of fear, longing and sorrow because her simple desire to hear the visionary company of love, its voice or gentle words of love and appreciation. From Stella and Mitch. However, these words are only visionary because instead of getting love, she gets the opposite, which is hatred from Stanley.
Throughout this essay I will be explaining the gender roles, comparing them and how they affect the Umuofian society. In the Umuofian society, Women and men have different roles and expectations to live up to, men were believed to be superior and that women were inferior. One of the tasks that women were burdened with was dinner. They were expected to prepare dinner for their family in the Umuofia tradition.
In Umuofia, traditions and beliefs are to be strongly respected. The line is clearly marked between men and women. Boys are taught to hide their feelings and be strong, while girls are expected to be more sensitive and caring. In Umuofia, men often generalize women and make stereotypical assumptions. The only significance of women to Okonkwo is that they represent the birth of children,
In the villages of Umuofia, men are seen as more imperious and well respected while females are portrayed as weak. For example, it was mentioned that “his mothers and sisters worked hard enough but they grew women’s crops like coco-yams, beans and cassava. Yam, the king of crops, was a man’s crop.” (Achebe 17).
