In case you haven’t heard, Lupe Valdez will be running for Texas Governor in 2018. She announced this five days before the candidate filing deadline for the 2018 primaries (Pollock). Valdez has called for “a “new Texas” that would put residents ahead of controversial policies like the sanctuary cities law, proposed bathroom bills other issues she said are on the fringe [sic]” (Jeffers). She has said that she knows it’s tough to decide whether to set aside money for college, food, or a place to live (Svitek). She has also said “Opportunity in Texas ought to be as big as this great state. . .”(Svitek), which is why she is running for Governor.
When some people hear rite of passage they might think of someone making a spiritual walk in to something that will change their lives. These people would not be wrong either. As discussed in class a rite of passage are rituals that mark key transitions in life. In the book, Shadowed Lives: Undocumented Immigrants in American Society, they talk about a rite of passage that these undocumented Mexican immigrants make to America to find work so they can send money back home to their families. In this passage these immigrants go through three key phrases.
Chavez, I cannot stress enough the emphasis on the objection letter from Cook County DA! Please, I need you to depict a different image of me or minimize its severity than originally portrayed by the DA. If we can counter attack the DA’s letter, most likely they will run out of ammo to attack us next time. The following emphasizes I need you to work on (just my recommendation, I am certain you have your strategy): • Minimize immigration/deportation since the DA claimed it is a federal concern but not the state • Primarily reason to seek pardon is to leave criminal life behind and move forward without any conscience 2.
Sanctuary cities act as safe havens for many undocumented immigrants, but they are being regulated between the various levels of our federated government system. President Donald Trump did not waste any time and as he vowed to crack down on undocumented immigrants living in the United States, he took immediate action as soon as he was in office. As president of the U.S., Trump has executive powers granted by Article II, Section 1 of the Constitution, therefore he has the authority to execute an order from the executive branch about societal issues. Being that Trump has this power, he did not hesitate to sign an executive order about immigrants. Based on the article, “Sanctuary Fight Viewed as Having Limited Fiscal Impact on Cities” by Keeley
This situation is a proof of the inequalities in the local management of Texas. Texas governor, Greg Abbott, and the two Houses of Texas Legislature are all Republican
Being a criminal lawyer is not easy, nonetheless when your in the spotlight. Defending a woman accused of mass murder was proving to be harder than it looks. Though Anisia knew it would be a determining case for her career, she decided to take the chance. She had never defended anyone accused of murder, she was always taking smaller cases such as petty theft or assault. Her whole reputation as a lawyer and a person was on the line.
Sanctuary cities are areas where laws, ordinances, resolutions , executive actions, or initiatives deny local law enforcement the ability to apprehend or question an individual based on his or her immigration status, even if there are reasons to believe the individual entered the country illegally. This action is achieved when the mayor of a city signs a bill preventing local law enforcement from questioning someone about his or her immigration status, such as if he has or does not have a visa/green card, even if they have been arrested for an unrelated topic. While in office, President Donald Trump threatened to cut the police budget of the cities that do not comply with immigration laws and turn in those who are in the country illegally.
In the process of working toward the American Dream, people struggle to fit in, to belong, to be accepted. For many of them, an important part of the American Dream is the chance to reinvent themselves—the opportunity to become someone different, someone better. In “Outlaw: My Life in America as an Undocumented Immigrant”, Jose Antonio Vargas is an “undocumented immigrant” who has been living illegally in the U.S. since he was twelve years old. To chase his American dreams, he embodied a lie until it became unbearable and he expose his truth and let the masks crumble onto the ground. In “Letter from Birmingham Jail”, Martin Luther King Jr. broke unjust laws and engaged in nonviolence direct action in order to pursue his American dream of equality and freedom.
However, there is one last debate about sanctuary cities that is more prominent than the rest- some people argue that the state of being an illegal immigrant should be a crime in itself, and punishable by all law enforcement. A person’s viewpoint on this pressing matter is based purely on personal preference and
The Diary of an Undocumented Immigrant is a biographical novel written by Ramon Perez and published in 1991. The narrative follows our storyteller and author Perez through his journey from a Zapotec village in Oaxaca, Mexico over the border, illegally of course (hence the title) into The United States where he experiences the many facets of American culture before returning to his home village two years later as a celebrated hero. Now, you might be wondering why that sentence was structured to deliberately include the word “hero,” it’s really quite simple. The topic of illegal immigration has always been a touchy subject between nations and the opinion of whether or not the immigrant accused is a “hero” or “villain” relies totally, on which side the controversy is viewed from. Having spent the past 237 pages shadowing Perez’s journey I feel compelled to see things from his standpoint.
Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has a plan to help out immigrants with a reform on immigration. Sanders has so much experience and knowledge in politics that it will not be a problem in executing a reasonable reform. Sanders wants to do more than former president Barack Obama. Sanders plan is not to expand borders, but to secure them. Also to put the Dream act into law to help give young immigrants a chance at permanent residency and eventual citizenship.
The central idea of the readings is to explain why illegal immigrant 's can 't afford a good life or a better life in America. One important detail that supports this idea is that "many immigrants who entered the U.S. unlawfully find it difficult to afford a college education". Finally, the article shows that immigrants are trying to get help for college from the Congress but they are unsuccessful because Congress would have to forgive all the illegal immigrants that are in America and the ones that are coming in. This has become a problem for many illegal immigrant and college students that are immigrants . Because of this, many of the cant afford college or a job .
Immigration in through Texas has always been at a high number, do too the border of Mexico touching Texas. However, the rate of illegal immigrants has increased drastically over the past couple of years. Studies performed by the Federation for American Reform (FAIR), shows that between 2010 and 2013 the number of illegal immigrants has increased by 70,000. With the rate of illegal immigrants, increasing at this rate, the taxpaying citizens, are taking a major hit. Illegal Immigration doesn’t seem like it would cause a major issue because they do make up 8.9 percent of the state’s labor force, based on the studies of the Pew Research Center.
People who are immigrants have many struggles they face when living in America. For instance, immigrants face the barrier of financial stability. When immigrants come to the states they barely have anything. Most immigrants leave with very little and need to start their life all over again. They need to find new housing and jobs.
