Robert Langdon is pretty used to some weird things. He is a professor of symbology after all. So, when he gets a phone call in the middle of the night, with a mysterious caller questioning him about the Illuminati, he is only slightly surprised, only because so few people know about them. The Illuminati are a secret society who believe in science above God, and therefore are enemies of the Catholic Church. The members that they know of consisted of Isaac Newton, Galileo Galilei, Bernini and so many more who will stay anonymous forever.(38) He is soon shocked when he receives a fax and on it is a picture of a man, murdered, stripped naked and bears a brand on his chest like Langdon has never seen before. There is evidence that the antimatter is hidden somewhere in the city. As the pope had died recently, Conclave is being held to elect a new one, so the city is full with reports, cardinals and spectators from around the world. As they are making preparation to leave, Kohler gets a flare up of his lifelong sickness, he is unable to join Langdon and Vittoria in the Vatican. Soon after they arrive, they try to convince the head of the Swiss Guard, Olivetti, that they need to evacuate the city immediately. Langdon involves the “camerlengo”, who is the person in charge of the Vatican until the new pope is elected, and while he is explaining the situation, the camerlengo gets a call from someone from the Illuminati. The caller informs them that the antimatter is hidden somewhere in the city, but that he has also kidnapped four cardinals, the four who were favored to become the new pope. He plans on murdering them one by one on the hour at 8, 9,10, and 11 p.m., and leaving them at four different churches all around Rome. Then, at midnight the bomb will go off, and it will demolish the city, as well as the billions of dollars worth of artwork that are centuries
