Technical aspects I recognized in “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin were imagery and symbolism. At the beginning of the short story, the narrator states, “It was a special kind of ice. It kept melting, sending trickles of ice water all up and down my veins, but it never got less" (122). The metaphor used to describe what the narrator felt was one I found interesting because it allowed me to experience what the narrator himself was going through. Additionally, I recognized was the light and dark imagery. An example of this is when Baldwin states, “And when light fills the room, the child is filled with darkness. He knows that every time this happens he's moved just a little closer to that darkness outside”(147). Baldwin emphasizes this to portray
