The story “All Gold Canyon” by Jack London is a tale of a man who discovers gold in a hidden valley that is a true natural paradise. He digs up the earth and must murder a man who wants to take the gold for himself. He leaves the valley with a fortune in gold but also leaves behind something far more precious. Written in 1905, London wrote “All Gold Canyon” for literary scholars of his day (Collection). The story can be challenging for modern readers but a reader may understand the story by learning the meaning behind All Gold Canyon, the description of imagery in a Christian viewpoint and the root of all evil. First, Jack London attended the University of California, Berkeley. Due to financial circumstances, which forced him to leave in 1897 and he never graduated (Jack London). Despite Jack London being an atheist, he goes to great length to describe this canyon as a paradise that represents heaven. For example, London describes the scenery as “The leaves and flowers were clean and virginal. The grass was young velvet” The canyon was a special place. He states the air is quiet showing a sense of nature in the natural life. The green surroundings show how the canyon is rich and plentiful. The water stream running through the canyon was blue. London describes the sky as for a Christian it represents heaven. It is a place that is priceless and offers all that a person should need or want. In this valley, he has no need for gold. London makes readers feel like they are actually in the canyon. The Canyon was perfect in every way. A Christian portrays the story as how a man is evil and is tempted every day with greedy desires.
